Session 80: Cinco de Mayo After Dark

Awesöme Orchestra is excited to be heading back to the Exploratorium in SF for their After Dark series! Join us on Thursday, May 5 for Session 80 — curated by guest conductor Dr. Sixto F. Montesinos Jr. We’ll be playing the Mexican National Anthem, Huapango by José Pablo Moncayo, Intermezzo de Atzimba by Ricardo Castro, and “June” from Camellia by local singer / songwriter Dia Luna. Surrounded by interactive science exhibits, we are expecting this session to fill up quickly, so make sure to sign-up to play when the link goes out on Thursday, April 21 at noon!

Full Event Details

WHEN: Thursday, May 5, 2022, 6:30-9:30pm

WHERE: Gallery 4, The Exploratorium, Pier 15, The Embarcadero, San Francisco, CA 94111

* This venue is 18+. Anyone under the age of 18 will not be allowed to enter the venue *

All players MUST enter at the front of the museum and sign in at the staff and volunteer booth (NOT at the ticket counter) across from their Seismic Joint Cafe to receive their free musician passes. Then walk back to Gallery 4 at the far end of the venue where we'll be playing.

COST: Free for participating musicians. Audience members will need to purchase After Dark tickets from The Exploratorium ($19.95)

TRANSPORTATION SUGGESTIONS: Easily accessible from the F muni line and BART (Embarcadero stop is .75 miles away, 15-minute walk). The Exploratorium has a lot of tips for public transportation options, street parking, garage parking, and driving directions. Please join our Discord to coordinate a carpool!

INSTRUMENTATION: INSTRUMENTATION: 3 flutes (3rd doubles piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (in B-flat), 1 E-flat clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns (in F), 3 trumpets (in B-flat), 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, 3 percussion, harp, violins, violas, cellos, double basses

7:40-8:30pm: Ricardo Castro - Intermezzo de Atzimba ~5'

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (in B-flat), 1 bassoon, 4 horns (in F), 2 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, 1 percussion, 1 harp, violins, violas, cellos, double basses

8:40-9:30pm: Dia Luna - "June" from Camellia (arr. Holly Mead) ~4'

featuring guest vocalist, Andrea Diaz of Dia Luna

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes, 1 piccolo, 2 oboes, 1 english horn, 2 clarinets (in B-flat), 1 bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon, 4 horns (in F), 3 trumpets (in C), 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone, 1 tuba, timpani, 3 percussion, keyboard, harp, violins, violas, cellos, double basses

FOR MUSICIANS

We will have space for 10 flutes, 6 oboes, 10 clarinets, 6 bassoons, 6 horns, 6 trumpets, 6 trombones, 2 tubas, 8 percussion, 2 harps, 2 keyboards, 24 violins, 12 violas, 12 cellos, and 8 double basses.

Be sure to sign up early as we expect some sections to fill up quickly! You can expect an email from your Awesöme Ambassadors with specific info by Thursday, April 28 (check your spam filters if this is your first session). Email your ambassadors if you haven't heard back by Friday, April 29 EOD. (Please be patient—they have a lot of information to collect before emailing everyone.) FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS

Session 80 at The Exploratorium will require audience members to purchase a ticket to After Dark from the Exploratorium. This event is 18+ only.  You can buy your ticket ($19.95) here.


COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS

*** Please note that proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 AND booster shot is required to enter the Exploratorium and participate in the session as a musician or attend as an audience member ***

You’ll be asked to upload a copy of your vaccination card (photo of your paper copy or screenshot of your digital card) when you sign up as a musician. Audience members can show their proof of vaccination status at the entrance to the events space. California residents may get a digital copy of their vaccine record at: https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov/

This is an INDOOR session. All attendees and participants will be REQUIRED to wear face masks, expect for winds and brass when actively playing their instruments.
