Session 82: An Awesöme Choral Return!

On Saturday, July 16, join Awesöme Orchestra at Oakland’s Uptown Body & Fender for Session 82 from 1-4pm, featuring the return of our Awesöme Chorus! Guest conductor Ondine Young will lead John Williams’ Hymn To The Fallen from Saving Private Ryan and we’re honored to have guest conductor Martha Stoddard back to lead the group for an exciting new piece by Alexis Alrich called Bell and Drum Tower (give it a listen!). Artistic Director David Möschler will then close out the evening with the thrilling "Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum" from Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem for orchestra and chorus.

WHERE: Uptown Body and Fender, 401 26th St., Oakland, CA 94612
The Session will be held inside the body shop!

COST: Free for participating musicians and audience.

TRANSPORTATION SUGGESTIONS: This venue is very accessible via public transportation. 19th St. BART is a 10 minute walk away, as are numerous AC Transit lines. Please join our Discord to coordinate walking buddies or a carpool! (https://discord.com/invite/UvCFQTsZrA)

PARKING: Very limited metered street parking is available for musicians. Large instruments may drop off their gear at the venue and then repark.

1:00 - 1:50pm: Hymn To The Fallen by John Williams from Ssving Private Ryan with chorus

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 1 English horn, 3 clarinets (B-flat) (3rd doubles bass clarinet), 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon, 4 horns (F), 3 trumpets (B-flat), 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, 2 percussion (snare drum, sus. cymbal, glockenspiel), 1 harp, strings, chorus (SATB)

2:00-3:00pm: Bell and Drum Tower by Alexis Alrich

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes (2nd doubles piccolo), 2 oboes (2nd doubles English horn), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns (F), 2 trumpets (B-flat), 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone, 1 tuba, timpani, 2 percussion (triangle, woodblocks, tambourine, templeblocks, sus. cymbals, crash cymbals, bass drum, chimes, xylophone), 1 piano, strings

3:15:4:00pm: "Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum" from Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi

INSTRUMENTATION: 3 flutes (3rd doubles piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B-flat), 4 bassoons, 4 horns (E-flat and C), 4 trumpets (C), (4 offstage trumpets in E-flat), 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, 1 percussion (bass drum), strings, chorus (SATB)

We will have space for 12 flutes, 4 oboes, 12 clarinets, 4 bassoons, 8 horns, 8 trumpets, 8 trombones, 2 tubas, 8 percussion, 2 harps, 2 keyboards, 32 violins, 12 violas, 16 cellos, and 8 double basses, 16 chorus sopranos, 16 chorus alto/mezzos, 16 chorus tenors, 16 chorus baritones/basses.

Be sure to sign up early as we expect some sections to fill up quickly! FOR AUDIENCE MEMBERS

We will have space for 100 audience members. This is a “bring your own chair” event, so make sure to bring a camping chair or something to sit on if you don’t want to be standing!

This event is free and open to all ages (all attendees must be able to show proof of full vaccination before entering the event space). Please RSVP to get full event details the week of the session. We ask that everyone who plans to attend RSVP separately for contact tracing purposes.

You’ll be asked to upload a copy of your vaccination card (photo of your paper copy or screenshot of your digital card) when you sign up as a musician. California residents may get a digital copy of their vaccine record at: https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov/

This is an INDOOR session. All attendees and participants will be REQUIRED to wear face masks (including chorus members), except for winds and brass when actively playing their instruments, guest vocalists, and conductors.
