Session 58: Indiana Jones, Carmen, and Twin Peaks

  • Plaza de César Chávez San Jose, CA, 95113 United States (map)

South Bay, we're coming for you with Session 58! We're beyond excited that we've been asked to participate in Make Music San Jose this year on Thursday, June 21! Make Music San Jose is a free, outdoor day of music held on the summer solstice with performances and music-making events happening citywide from sunrise to sunset. Sounds like our kind of adventure! It will be another outdoor session, so once again bring your hats, sunscreen, stand clips, and battery-powered stand lights since it'll get dark by the end of the session.

WHEN: Thursday, June 21, 2018, 6:00–9:00 p.m.

WHERE: Plaza de César Chávez, 194 S Market St., San Jose, CA (at the north end of the park in downtown San Jose)

BACKUP LOCATION FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER: TBA

TRANSPORTATION SUGGESTIONS: As with previous San Jose sessions, we recommend having folks carpool together as possible (to coordinate, we suggest posting on this Facebook event and community announcements page). It's a very central location for South Bay folks, though very limited street parking is available. Double bassists and players of other large instruments can use the unloading zone directly next to the stage and re-park close by as needed.

Repertoire, instrumentation, and schedule are as follows, with conductor David Möschler:

6:00–6:50 p.m. - John Williams - "Raider's March" from Raiders of the Lost Ark (~5')

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes, 1 piccolo, 2 oboes, 1 English horn, 2 clarinets (in B-flat), 1 bass clarinet, 3 bassoons (3rd doubles contra), 4 horns (in F), 4 trumpets (in B-flat), 4 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, 2 percussion (snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, glockenspiel), piano / celeste, harp, strings

7:00–7:50 p.m. Georges Bizet - Carmen Suite No. 1 - (all five movements, ~ 12')

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes (2nd doubles piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (in A and B-flat), 2 bassoons, 4 horns (in F), 2 trumpets (in B-flat), 3 trombones, timpani, 3 percussion (tambourine, triangle, bass drum, snare drum, crash cymbals), harp, strings

8:00–8:50 p.m. - Angelo Badalamenti Twin Peaks Suite (orchestrated by Kenny Landrum, ~ 8')

INSTRUMENTATION: 2 flutes, 1 alto flute, 2 oboes, 1 English horn, 2 clarinets (in B-flat), 1 bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon, 4 horns (in F), 3 trumpets (in C), 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, drum set, 1 glockenspiel, 2 keyboards, 1 guitar, harp, strings

SHEET MUSIC for upcoming open sessions can always be found on Google Drive at: bit.ly/AOCOpenSession (the Twin Peaks parts are still being finalized and should be ready June 16, but the full score can be viewed now).

Please bring a music stand (hard-backed works best in conjunction with our stand clips!), sunglasses, and battery-powered stand light since it'll get dark by the end of the session! We'll have chairs, sheet music, stand clips, and water for the musicians! Unfortunately, due to permitting, we can't have beer at this venue so it'll be a dry event, but please feel free to join us afterward just down the block at a local beer garden (TBA soon)!

The sign-up deadline for all sections is Sunday, June 17. Once that has passed, expect an email from your Awesöme Ambassadors with specific info and part assignments (check your spam filters if this is your first session). Email your ambassadors if you haven't heard back by June 19. (Please be patient—they have a lot of information to collect before emailing everyone.) Their information can be found at www.awesomeorchestra.com/ambassadors
